Applesauce Anyone?

Our Yellow Transparent apple tree has been blessing us with lots of apples this year that are relatively worm free.  Most years this is not the case and it makes cutting them up to dehydrate or make into applesauce a huge chore.  Not so this year thankfully. 😊  This is the second morning that I have been working on making applesauce to freeze for future meals.  Both hubby and I enjoy homemade applesauce and I am hoping to get 4 batches made and frozen while the tree is still producing.  I will admit that it was a struggle to get it done today because my arms feel like they have lead in them and my neck and back feel like they are on fire with my current Fibro flare.  Yes, I overdid it yesterday big time, but I did get a lot done that needed to be.  Here is my easy process for making applesauce in the crockpot.

Wash your apples.

Core and cut into bite sized pieces.  You can leave the skins on with this type of apple but you need to peel apples with thicker skins.  You could also peel these apples before cutting them if you prefer a smoother applesauce, but we don't mind the bits of skin that don't break down completely...most of it does though.

Fill your crockpot so it is mounding with apples but you can still fit the lid on.  I used one of my biggest crockpots.

Add about 1 cup of water for a large crockpot and cook on low heat.

Stir your applesauce about every 45 minutes or so as it breaks down.

Add sugar to taste.  I added about 1 cup of sugar because my apples were pretty tart to begin with and my hubby likes a sweet applesauce.  You could also add cinnamon (to taste) at this point of you wanted to.

Cook your applesauce for about another hour as it thickens up and reduces down further.  You can use a stick blender to break it down and make a smoother sauce at this point if you like but we prefer it chunky.

Let the applesauce cool and then enjoy right away and/or freeze/or can some for some delicious eating later.  I freeze mine.

Happy Eating!

    1. Thanks my friend! I started this post yesterday and was going to make another batch today but we had a family member needing help so it got pushed back for another day. It's ok, family always comes first in my book. :)

  3. I was just wondering if you were making 'sauce. What an amazing abundance you're getting this year from your tree!

My apples are still in my refrig and will be for at least a few more days. Great idea to use the crockpot! I think I'll try that when the time comes.
Sorry to hear you're into a flare. But I do understand how some times the drive to get things done takes over. It happens to me too.
    Cheers,

    1. The other side of the apple tree is starting to ripen now too so I will have many more apples to work with soon. I still have a bucket full to make into sauce sitting here even without doing any more picking though. ;)

I'm flaring a bit today too. The plan was to mostly take it easy today and just get some baking done but we had a family member who needed help so I did that for a few hours and am now working on 2 loaves of sandwich bread and will be pulling 3 loaves of banana bread out of the oven in a few minutes. :)

  7. Havent made applesauce this year as I have lots from last year. I will be drying apple slices in my oven. I dip them in either lemon juice or ascorbic acid, the in some cinnamon, sometimes I use a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Hope you feel better soon. Praying for you.

    1. Thank you Jean. I may end up drying some of the apples too since there are many more on the tree just waiting to be picked tomorrow. :)

  8. Boy, are those apples so pretty and delicious looking!! I 'm too far South to grow them, but appreciate all who do.

My children love applesauce and I was able to buy 5 packs of 6 containers of unsweetened granny apple sauce for only .50 cents a pack! I'm sure your applesauce taste much better and your tutorial looks so simple too!

If we travel this year to go apple picking, I'll be coming back to your recipe. Take care and I hope you have a great day!

    1. You got a great deal on that applesauce! I hope you are able to pick some apples this year. We have a large family owned orchard right up over the hill from us and we pick other varieties of apples there for .50 a pound. So yummy! I hope you are having a great day too!

  9. Oh my gosh I can just imagine how heavenly your house smelled!!! I thought I was going to have apples this year but they are so small - such a shame. The guy next door has a huge tree loaded with apples, I'm hoping he won't mind if I grab some as he doesn't seem to touch them, they just fall off! What a waste!!

    1. Hi Debbie, I am sorry your apples are so small this year. Take your neighbor some of that yummy soup you make or your marinara sauce...that is sure to get him to allow you to pick all the apples you want! ;)

  10. Hi Debbie. Stopping by to say Hello and hoping you're having a good day. The weather is cooler then it has been. I'm enjoying the breeze through my open patio door.Tomorrow and Sunday the heat is supposed to return.
I'm taking it fairly easy today. I did manage to go to one community garden and putter around and water. It was lovely. Also picked enough strawberries for desert tonight and a serving to put in the freezer. Slowly my freezer is getting full.
    Take good care,
    SJ
