A Touch of Fall is in the Air
I love Fall. I think it is my favorite time of the year. The crisp and cool air in the morning and being able to sleep with the windows open to let the cooler night air in are so healing to me. Glorious ever changing colors on the leaves is something that I look forward to each year. It is always a time of really giving thanks to God above for the beauty that He has created for us all.
This morning I was given a wonderful gift with an early glimpse of Fall. I knew last night when the air was much cooler than previous nights and I had to put on a long sleeved pajama gown that I was in for a treat this morning. It was 48F when I got up around 6:30a.m. after some whining from Caesar to be let outside. I wrapped myself up in a fuzzy robe, put on some nice warm house slippers and got the coffee going. Once the coffee was made, I put in in a thermal cup, got the water going on the gardens and the settled in on the back porch to enjoy said coffee.
A day like this just calls for a warm and comforting dinner does it not? I pulled some cooked rice and some chicken and green chili tamales out of the freezer. I'll make Mexican rice with the rice by just adding some tomatoes and seasonings to it. We'll have a nice green salad with it it too. It will be quick, easy and so yummy!
Doofy cat followed me to the front door when I went out to do the watering and seemed very happy to see the sun streaming in through the glass in the storm door. He is a cat that loves heat so I left the big front door open so that he could bask in the warmth coming through the storm door. He is one very contented kitty right now.
Caesar is also enjoying the cooler weather this morning. He is happily walking around the back yard eating grass and raspberries, visiting with his doggy friends and taking breaks to lay down in the sun and catch a few zzzzzz's. Oh the life of a spoiled dog!
I'm debating with myself as to what to do today. I think I will pick some Summer apples from our tree and if I have enough energy after that I may take Caesar for a short walk past the apple orchard here in town and see how the apples and pears are coming along there and look for any leaves that may be starting to turn colors with our much cooler nights. That just sounds like a wonderful way to spend my day.

Those cooler temps will definitely get you in the mood for Fall. I'm ready for cooler temps in NC, but it's still very hot here!
ReplyDeleteHello and I hope you are having a wonderful day! I'll bet you are looking forward to Fall too. You live in such a beautiful part of the country. :)
DeleteYour coffee on the back porch sounds wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool here this morning as well. Had to put on a sweatshirt when I took the dog for his first walkabout. And, I've had the windows and slider open most of the day. I went to the gardens this morning - I'm still playing catch up from being away last weekend. Those weeds...oh my...I do tend to lose the battle with crab grass every year. I have nice assortment of veggies to cook for dinner.
I had enough energy yesterday to can up 3 pints of bread and butter pickles and canned about 5 X 1/4-pints of pickled hot peppers this morning. I'm so thrilled. I couldn't do any canning last summer. I used the small batch cookbook written by---your cousin? friend? Anyway, both recipes were great.
Also picked apples at the community garden and almost filled a 5-gallon bucket. They're sitting by my front door. I hope to make applesauce. It may end up in the freezer rather then canned.
Hope you had a good day....SJ
I'm so proud of you for getting that canning done and yes, the cookbook author is my cousin. :) Jeff and I picked some Summer apples today from our tree and I hope to get them made into applesauce here tomorrow. Be blessed my friend!
DeleteI really enjoy those cool mornings. We made a visit to the orchard this weekend. There were only two varieties ready but the trees were loaded. I'm looking forward to the change of season.
ReplyDeleteHI Wendi, I am wondering how the apples at the local orchard fared here this year since we had such a hot and dry Summer. I really want to get some more Honeycrisps this year.
DeleteI like fall the best as well. It's my favorite. I felt just a little nip in the air yesterday morning, too, but it wasn't as nippy here as you had it. I'm ok for summer to hold on a little longer because I'm just getting at the canning and hope to get another burst of raspberries from these bushes that were here at the house when we moved in.
ReplyDeleteThey have put out another set of branches and blooms, and I can see that each one of those new shoots has a cluster of berries on it. I haven't grown everbearing before, but it's been more like a few all at once, then nothing, then a new burst of berries coming along, rather than berries all the time. I didn't get very many frozen the first time, so am hoping to get a nice bunch to freeze this time around.
I need to get my hands on some apples to make sauce with. Today, my sister gave me 2 huge boxes of pears, so I will start canning those once they get ripe. I'd also like to make some sweet pickles if the cukes cooperate--they kind of stopped while I was gone, but there are some more blooms. Time will tell.
HI Becky, do you have any tips on how to get more cucumbers to form on your cucumber plants? I have lots of blooms but have only gotten 3 cucumber total off of 4 plants so far this year.
DeleteI'm sorry, I don't. I've never done anything to make them pollinate--just plant them, then keep them picked off. The reason I think mine are about done is because there are a few blooms at the tips of the vines, but that's about all, and they may or may not make little cucumbers. I have noticed a lot of bees and other insects working away in my garden.
DeleteIt's supposed to be winter here but it feels more like summer. It got up to 26 degrees Celsius today that's 79F. We have a cold front that will take the temps down around Friday. Tomorrow is another hot day in our area. I do like wandering around in shorts and Tshirts, rather than layers of clothing.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your cooler weather.
HI Jane, I hope things do cool down for you a bit. The low 70's F are just right for me. ;)
DeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteI share your love of all things fall!!!
Have a cozy day. : )
Well thank you! :) I hope you have a nice day as well!
DeleteYou paint a lovely picture of your morning - and I had to giggle about Caesar eating grass and raspberries! I thought I had the only dog who likes fruit!!
ReplyDeleteHI Debbie, it's funny but all of our dogs have loved various kinds of fruit. We had one that absolutely adored watermelon of all things. One of our old cats tried to steal pears from us all the time too. Aren't fur babies funny? :)
Deleteps....I voted....nice photo!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit confused...do I have a photo in a contest I don't know about?
