My Whole Wheat Oatmeal Bread

Here is the recipe for the bread that I make for my hubby's sandwiches that he takes to work.  I created this recipe while fooling around trying to make a healthier version of the bread that I used to make by adding some oatmeal and a bit of oil to my old bread recipe.  My hubby loves this bread and so do it!

Whole Wheat Oatmeal Bread

2 cups unbleached flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup quick oats
2 tablespoons dry yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons oil
 2 cups very warm water

Mix dry ingredients .  Add wet ingredients.  Mix all together. If the dough is sticky, you may have to add a bit more flour. Knead for 3 minutes in the mixer or by hand for about 6 minutes.  Divide into 2 loaves and let rise in greased loaf pans.  Bake at 400 degrees F  for 25 minutes.

  1. Nice to see your post. Do you ever use a bread machine? Just curious.
I got through Christmas without any crashes -yea! The weather has kept me at home for the most part. The dog has adjusted to mostly spending the time at home with no real complaints. Cheers, SJ

    1. Hi SJ, yes I do use a bread machine for some of my other breads that I make. I have not tried this recipe in it though. I'm so glad you got through Christmas without any crashes...that is wonderful! I'm spending more time at home too and my poor dog is not happy that his walks around the neighborhood have dwindled down to about 1 a week now when my husband braves the weather, ice and snow and takes pity on him. ;)

  3. Sounds good! I have a big bread machine and it could handle mixing this much but I would prefer to bake it the old fashioned way and in 2 pans like you do.
    Thanks for the recipe,
