October 2017 Grocery Budget Challenge Update #1

At our last check in we had spent $150- $46.99 = $103.01 left for the rest of the month.

New Updated spending:

Spent $3.14 at Walmart for milk and 2 treats and additional $25.91 at Grocery Outlet.  At the Grocery Outlet we bought a double pack of Yoshida's Gourmet Sauce, a large bottle of olive oil, 2 sodas for the long grice home, sliced mushrooms, a 2 pound bag of cut up frozen butternut squash and 3 containers of flavored cream cheese.  We would have spent $3 less there but discovered they overcharged us on the olive oil.  By the time we realized the mistake, we were already home and not about to drive an hour back to get them to refund $3.

So, $103.01-$3.14-$25.91 = $73.96 left for the rest of the month.

  1. Good job. You can do it. that's almost $25 a week for the next 3 weeks. You have a great stockpile, so you should meet your goal!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Cheryl. I am headed out to my garden to cut some of my green onions before the rain hits later and we have a bad freeze that will take them all out. I'll cut them up and freeze them for later. Be blessed my friend!

  2. Very good! But I know how you feel when you discovered the $3 charge too late. I usually check before I leave the store after I check out, but it seems the one day I don't I find a mistake! Your "treat" of the soda for the ride home was a good price for soda! Andrea

    1. Thank Andrea, I usually do catch things in the store, but was distracted that day.

  3. I hate being overcharged. Here, if you get overcharged and discover this after leaving the check out, you can go back to the service desk. They are then required to refund the entire amount and the item is yours for free. This is only in the big supermarkets and not the smaller ones. Sounds like you are going to meet your monthly challenge quite well.

    1. Jane, some stores here also will give you the item free and refund your money, but you have to ask, at least that has been my experience even if it is the company's policy.

  4. Doesn't being overcharged drive you bananas! I am now forcing myself to look at the receipts before I leave the store. Usually I can figure it out that way in time to get it fixed.

  5. Hi Debbie!You're doing a great job!:)
The other day, my husband and I went grocery shopping and bought a cheese that was marked half the price.
When we got home, we saw that the cashier scanned the original price and not the lower one.
    Ugh!
But the gas we were going to spend, didn't conpensate for that.
Were going to pay more attention from now on!
    :)

  6. Debbie, I'm writing from my old blog. I'm not going to write on the other one I had, but I just noticed, that this blog had the private setings on, but now it's visible.
    Have a great day!

  8. You are doing so good on your challenge! Keep it up.

I love shopping at Grocery Outlet. In fact, I went there yesterday. I was able to get a big box of coffee pods for $20, and it held 80, so that is 25c/pod. That's a price I can live with and have been looking for. It's so easy to buy too much in there, especially when I find a really good price. But, I kept it down, while still getting the things I wanted, such as lunchmeat, the coffee, hot chocolate mix (the kids are really drinking it and the canisters were only $2.99 each) and some other items. While I was in there, I picked up a cheap box of Dora the Explorer cereal for $1.50. Rob takes whatever I can find for reasonable to school for snacks for the kids. So, they are not picky, and I can grab whatever is cheap and they are happy. The other teachers do, too, and the parents send snacks, too.

So far in the month, I have spent around $80. I'm on a medium budget for this month--not super low, and not a big stock-up month. I had to go buy 2 boxes of butter for $3/box because I just have not been able to find it for less lately. I'll keep looking, but will likely buy a few more at that price, until it comes down. Sadly, it's much more than even the $3 right now--that was a sale and they only let me have 2:(

Keep up the good month's spending! You are almost 1/2 way there:)

    1. Hi Becky, I saw those coffee pods too. :) They were a pretty good deal but we don't use them. My father and brother do though. :) About the hot chocolate, have you checked out Winco's prices of it in the bulk bins? I get most of mine there, except when there is a screaming sale somewhere else.

YOu are doing great on your budget for this month also. I am sorry about you having to spend so much on butter though.

    2. You know, about the butter......I can get "stuck" on something as much as my autistic kiddos can......I've had to remind myself that I'm talking about a dollar. The price of a Coke at McDonald's, or an item at the Dollar Store. A pack of gum, or piece of candy. Then, I laughed at myself a little and just went and bought the silly butter:) I do try to keep the budget down, and do pretty well most of the time, but sometimes a girl's just got to have her butter:) Then, the girls made a lot of caramel corn from a lot of it----so I now need more:) It was good to see both Lovana and Patsy enjoy making it so much and we've all enjoyed eating a bunch of it. The rest is for a 4H bake sale. It was worth it to see them make something so yummy and have fun.

  9. Good work! When they put the new self-serve machines in at Walmart, my son accidentally rang something up twice. Since it wasn't noticed until he got home, we were out the money. I did the same thing the other day, but fortunately, I noticed while I was still ringing it up. Oh for the days of people waiting on us!

    1. That is so frustrating Laura. I have noticed less and less lanes with cashiers open at Walmart but lots more of the self checkout machines were installed there recently.

  10. Looks like you are doing very well with the grocery budget! Sorry about the over charge - always happens to me when I don't take the time to check the receipt at the store!
