Jeff and I got a free turkey way back in November and had it in the freezer. He and I decided that it was time to cook that baby up and see how many meals we could get out of it. Here is the final tally...
~2 complete turkey with wonderful side dishes meals
~3 pans of turkey enchiladas (froze 2 pans of them and the first pan fed us twice)
~2 quart bags and 1 gallon sized bag of turkey meat (into the freezer they went)
~3 quart sized bags of bone broth (freezer again)
~2 gallon sized bags of turkey pot pie filling (freezer...are you seeing a pattern here yet)
~3 quart sized bags of turkey noodle soup (freezer) and one meal we ate right away
~1 gallon bag turkey soup base (freezer)
~2 turkey sandwich meals
~1 curried turkey salad meal
~1 quart sized bag of turkey alfredo sauce (freezer)
Not bad for one 18 pound turkey. With Jeff's upcoming surgery we are trying so hard to not spend money if not needed and still have some great meals. Since his surgery is right when the heat gets really bad and the heat makes me ill, we needed easy meals or makings of meals to just pull out of the freezer or harvest from the garden. I don't drive out of town so there will be no grocery store runs....everything has to be bought and ready ahead of time. I think we did well!
It's nice you got that turkey turned into so many usable future meals! I'm glad you husband is getting his knee surgery. My husband has needed hip replacement for 2 years now, and has been ready (had to lose weight) since October. Through a series of unfortunate events, including the last one, Covid 19, it is finally rescheduled yet again, for June 29. We are really crossing our fingers that it will happen this time.
ReplyDeleteBecky, I pray your hubby can finally get his surgery. Jeff's knee replacement surgery was put off until July 7th due to Covid-19 also.
DeleteWow, Becky, you did great! You really got a lot of meals from that turkey! I'm glad you have the freezer space for it all, too! :)
ReplyDeleteWe have two large freezers in the garage and I also used the one in the kitchen to stuff it all in. Our freezers are all packed at the moment. Not a bad problem to have. ;)
DeleteGreat job!!!! That's a lot of good eating.
ReplyDeleteThank you Cheryl!
DeleteYour use of the turkey is right up my alley! I get the biggest ones that will fit my tiny oven (can't get anything bigger than 18-19 lbs) at the holidays; one for thanksgiving and then a 16-18 lb one for doing exactly what you did. And we also freeze up all the remainder of the 1st one. I usually cook the 2nd one in the spring too and freeze it all up for quick meals in the heat of the summer. I like your style!!
ReplyDeleteHi Dawn, it sounds like your oven and mine are about the same size. I'm glad that you also are able to do the same with your turkey!
DeleteMy kids used to sing a song about Turkey, Turkey, Turkey till I die.....
ReplyDeleteThat is funny!
DeleteGreat job with the turkey. Sounds like you will have lots of delicious meals.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kathy!
DeleteWell done. All those dinners prepped will certainly come in handy when the weather gets hot..or hotter.
ReplyDeleteI had what I thought was an expensive week. My glass frames broke on Wednesday. They didn't even hit the ground. As they were falling off my face, I grabbed them and the corner broke.Just called and it turns out I had bought the extended warranty. Yea me - something I don't usually do. So for $25, I'll go in tomorrow and get my 'new' pair. They still had the same frames in stock so they just have to pop in my lenses.
Hope you're still having a good week.
Cheers

Oh no...I'm so glad you had the extended warranty.
DeleteThat is a lot of fine eating.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
